AL East Division rivals will clash tonight, when the New York Yankees travel to Tropicana Field to take on the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees (61-66) have dropped 10 of their last 11 games and have fallen out of playoff contention. On Thursday, New York went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position during a 6-5 home loss versus Washington. The Tampa Bay Rays have won 43 of their first 65 home games and trail first place Baltimore by 1.5 games. On Thursday, OF Josh Lowe snapped an eighth inning tie with a two-run blast to lift Tampa Bay to a 5-3 home victory versus lowly Colorado.
Thirty-two year old righty Gerrit Cole (10-4 3.03 ERA) has finished in the top five of Cy Young voting five times and has yet to win the award. Last time out, Cole was tagged for six runs in four innings during an 8-1 home loss versus Boston.
Twenty-nine year old righty Zach Eflin (13-7 3.58 ERA) has proven to be worth every dollar Tampa Bay dished out for him in free agency. In his last start, Eflin allowed one run across six solid frames during an 18-4 road triumph against Los Angeles.
Through 127 games, New York ranks 22nd in OPS and 24th in runs scored. For the season, Tampa Bay ranks 4th in OPS and 4th in runs scored. Take the Yankees for the win.
